People in the construct trade still don’t realize that you need your tools and appliances tested and tag at least every three months to meet Australian Standards.

Well the team at Be Smart Electrical has come up with an interesting way to solve this problem.

Be Smart Electrical is a portable appliance testing company, we come to you onsite. The way we have designed it is that this is a business tool for you.

It’s a cost effective way of meeting compliance but also adding value to your tools and asset tracking. For the cost we charge, which is per item, you know exactly what your costs are today and ongoing. It’s not a hit and miss, it’s all verified by a report and we can also do all your repairs onsite.

We basically test to the standards, we make sure that there in safe working condition to meet your compliance for health and safety, for OSH and for Site Safe. The other thing which we do which is probably the most important part of test and tag, is that we actually barcode every single item. So we do make, model, serial number. If an accident happened, you need to protect yourself by having the data accessible. Showing when the test was taken place and with the individual test results. We have to keep that data for seven years, so we have a back up system here and we have servers over seas which keep it intact for us and we update it constantly.

Theft is a major thing in the construction industry, you’re got multiple guys working on a site, contractors, sub-contractors it’s very easy for your tool to walk away. One of the good things is with a tag, we can identify the name of your company on the tag and also the individual name if we need to. If the tool was stolen the database can prove the tool was stolen.

We had guys turn up to sites at 7 o’clock in the morning. Have the keys in the van, turn around, open the gate turn around and someone driven off in the van. What happens is they call us, we need the rego of that van, we supply the data to them of what was in that van. They can then get insurance process, no questions its all verified by a independent party.

The other amazing thing is that we have even picked up stolen tools, where guys have gone and removed the serial number and all information about the tool, but they forgot to take the tag off. Someone walked in and seen the tag, rung us for the number, we have verified the its existence, police are here the next thing you know arrests are made. That is going to happen more and more.

If they see a tool tag by Be Smart Electrical edged and engraved and a tool that is not edged and engraved and tag, which tool do you think they are going to take. Its pretty common sense. So you are protecting yourself on that level as well.

Compliance is not going away, you might as well except it. And if you get it done, get it done right.

Christmas is fast approaching and everybody is in the process of
preparing to decorate their home or garden with festive lights. Here are some handy tips of preparing to have safe Christmas Holidays.

When buying new decorative lighting kits, look for an approval number (e.g. Qxxxxx; Vxxxxx; Nxxxxx; NSWxxxxx; Sxxxxx) or the regulatory compliance mark logo, which indicates compliance with Australian standards. These are normally found on the decorative lighting and may also be printed on the packaging.

Use extra-low-voltage (12V or 24V) decorative lights, especially outdoors, on fences, metal work, roofs or downpipes. These should be supplied with an approved power supply unit (transformer).

Do not alter or modify any lighting equipment.

Lights used outdoors should be specifically designed for this purpose.

If power points are not protected by a built-in safety switch, either have a licensed electrical contractor install one, or connect decorative lighting through a portable safety switch.

Be aware that using multiple high-powered lamps may overload your electric circuits.

When using multiple sets of decorative lighting or high-powered lights (such as para-floods, flood lights or spotlights), plug them into a power board fitted with overload protection.

The use of double adaptors or piggy back plugs is not recommended.

Use only factory-made extension leads or those made by a licensed electrician.

Before use, check decorative lighting and all leads for damage, and only use if undamaged.

Always fully unwind extension leads to avoid overheating.

All outdoor electrical connections must be weatherproof. You can buy weatherproofing accessories that do the job. Regulatory compliance mark logo

So have a Safety, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. HO HO HO!
